Dapper Day Dress WIP

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been MIA after the Christmas season. Work started to pick up and I've also been busy planning my Dapper Day outfit. For those of you unfamiliar with Dapper Day check them out at www.dapperday.com. It's an unofficial event at Disneyland where guest attend in their finest 1950s attire. This event was inspired by the vintage Disneyland posters where you see all the guest attending the parks in their Sunday best.

I've been working with my friend and her mother in law to manipulate an already existing pattern into a dress of my size. Unfortunately I don't have a super skinny waist so there were a lot of inches to be added to the pattern.

Note to self, tracing paper is your friend when you don't fit a pattern exactly.

My Trip to JoAnn and What Should Be My Next Project?

My trip to JoAnn last week was a short but exciting one. If any of you follow me on Instagram you may have noticed I posted the add for 50% off Fiskars products during the Joann Labor Day sale and saying I was going to get it. Well, I did! I had to leave for a camping trip that afternoon so I made sure to go to JoAnn in the morning.

As soon as I stepped through the doors I couldn't help but notice the new spot for the licensed fabrics. Up front and plainly in sight. It definitely got my attention! I strolled through the aisle and was pretty giddy about what I saw so I snapped some photos because I really wanted to share with everyone the new selection of fabric that they had. I'm sure some of you may have already seen it since I'm not sure when the last time I was in JoAnn's was but I'm sure you can be excited about it again with me. :)

My SJ Made Milestone

I originally had this post titled as "I Survived SJ Made" and realized that it was a little silly for me to have a title stating that I survived because it wasn't a life threatening event.  After some reflection I've decided that it was more of a milestone in my life.  With that said, this post might be a little bit longer and not like my previous blogpost, so I have to say thank you for putting up with me and continuing to read my posts.  I'm going to ramble a little bit in this post and talk about what I feel in my heart.  Jenna from White Rabbit Photography posted on her personal blog this week an open letter to her readers.  I guess you can say it inspired me, and this is my open letter so please bare with me while I speak/write what's been on my mind.

**Warning** This blog post is looooooooooooooooong.  I wanted to split the post into two, but I also didn't want to wait too long before posting my experience review so here it is all in one long post.

It's been 7 months since I was laid off from my corporate job and at the beginning I have taken a month or two off from actively searching for a job to enjoy the holiday season, but other than that I have always been searching job listings, twitter posts and utilizing any other career networking channel I have available to me.  And here I am still unemployed.  It is a very very very depressing feeling.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not depressed because I have such a wonderful support group made up of my family and friends (more on that later) but there are times when I can't but help feel a little saddened by the fact that I still cannot find a job with my experience in today's job market.  When I originally started blogging it was to keep myself distracted and busy learning new things.  An opportunity to find myself and work on becoming a better happier me.  I had the opportunity for continued learning/education but I didn't gravitate in that direction. Instead I gravitated towards building my crafting and creative skills.  This is what made me happier.  Right before my event at SJ Made I read a guest post on Blogging it Forward by Anita Boeira about some tips from Peter Shankman.  One quote in particular caught my eye:

My last job had things I loved about it, but also more things I hated than loved.  I never imaged myself at a  desk job doing the mundane things in life.  I love communicating and working with others.  I also had a knack at being organized and putting all the puzzle pieces together as a project manager.  But I wasn't doing what I was passionate about and I wasn't having fun at work every day.  I worked hard at that company for 5 years and there were multiple times at the early stages with that company when I would call my mom and sister to cry and complain about how unhappy I was and I just wanted to quit.  Every time I got the same response from them telling me a job is a job and you have to just deal with it, so I dealt with it and in the end the job was the one that let me down.  So when I saw the quote I felt like it was talking directly at me.  It made me understand that things happen for a reason.  You always read it in books, hear it on TV, but let me tell you, when you experience a moment like this for yourself it has a lot more meaning.

DIY My Little Pony Plush - Part 2

Here's part 2 of the DIY My Little Pony Plush post.  (Click here for Part 1)  Don't forget that the full instructions/tutorial can be found at the original source here.

When we last left off I just completed the head of the pony.  Next step is to complete the body.

You want to start by attaching the hoof (circle) to the underbody.  You will start by attaching the circle hoof at two points.  I took a little short cut because I didn't want to attach 2 points.

I pinned a needled into the 2nd point to hold it in place and started sewing at the first point.  That way I can have more flexibility to the half circle.

Infinity Gauntlet - Paper prototype

Hi Everyone!  How has your new year been so far?  Here's my first post for 2013!  I can feel that it's going to be quite the exciting year. Especially since I just made another Etsy sale!!  *happy dance*  Okay, enough diddle daddling and to the point now.  Time for the infinity gauntlet prototype post.

  • Left Yellow glove (since the template is for the left or flip template for right hand)
  • A print of David Guyton's Gauntlet template
  • Thumb tacks (from the Dollar Tree)
  • Tape
  • Pliers optional
So my boyfriend loves comic books and has always told me about the Infinity Gauntlet and how he wants one.  Every time we walk around a craft store or random shop and he sees gems he would pick them up and wonder if they can be incorporated into a gauntlet some how.  So one day after Halloween I was Googleing and You Tubing other random projects such as resin masks and props and one video caught my eye.

"How to Make a Gauntlet Armor Tutorial" by David J. Guyton

The gold gauntlet caught my eye and not to mention it's a tutorial!  I clicked on the video and watched it and was throughly impressed.  What made this video more amazing was that he was selling the template for $5.  I was a little worried at first since the video was posted in 2010 and didn't know if I would get the template or even a response if I paid for the template, but I noticed that David is really quick in providing youtube responses so I gave it a go.  After I paid for the template he responded with the gauntlet template within in 24 hours!  Also, he just posted a new video today for gauntlet version 2 so you'll have some options for your design!  The video above suggest that you make a paper prototype first so that's exactly what I did.

DIY Hex Nut Bracelet

Original pin: http://pinterest.com/pin/231724343296933783/
Original Blog: Honestly WTF

Pin rating: 4.5
Duration: 30-40 minutes the first time and then it gets easier.

I love these DIY jewelry that includes hardware materials.  For starters it's cheap to buy the materials AND they add a unique pop too any every day outfit.  There's only 2 materials required for this but it was a little difficult to do at first but then I got the hang of it.  I've made 3 now and It can be done within 15-20 minutes.  One thing I do recommend is that you actually go to the hardware store to pick these up.  It helps to have the materials in hand to identify the size and thickness.  Also it's a lot cheaper in store!

  • Cotton Cable Cord (#21 x 150m picked up at OSH for $2.49)
    • Cut 3 stands ~30inches.  Original blog calls for 1 yard but I felt like that was too long.
  • 18-20 Flat hex nuts (#8-32 100 pack - $2.99)
*Update* You can now purchase your own Hex Nut Necklace DIY Kit via my Etsy shop

DIY Washer + Ribbon Necklace

Original pin: http://pinterest.com/pin/231724343298464714/
Original blog: Nestled

Pin rating: 4.5
Difficulty: Easy

I love no sew projects and this one in particular was quite fun.  I definitely had an easier time with this one than I did with the pearl ribbon bracelets.  Also loves that this little project required me to make a trip to the hardware store.  I just get all giddy when I'm in there.  That place is so amazing and can inspire so many DIY projects for the home, or in this case jewelry.  My next blog post is also going to be a jewelry piece that includes material from the hardware store so check back on Wednesday.

So I struggled a little at first in understanding the instructions because it mentions to thread ribbon up or down through the washers but since it has the pictures it made it a lot easier to understand.  I'm going to use the instructions from the Nestled blog and try to clarify anything I thought was confusing.  It was mostly  step 1 where I got confused but everything else was straight forward.

  • 20 pieces of 7/16" flat washer (50 pack at Orchard Supply Hardware for ~$3.00)
  • 1 1/2 yard of 5/8" wide ribbon
*Update* You can now purchase your very own Washer Necklace DIY Kit via my Etsy Shop.

DIY Off the shoulder T-shirt

This blog post is a little different because I didn't actually follow any step by step blog tutorial from a pin.  This project was actually inspired when I was shopping and there was a really expensive shirt that I wanted to buy and just couldn't afford.  I decided to try my luck at making it and I think it was a success!  I looked over the two DIY t-shirt modified pins on pintrest and got a feel for how they converted their shirts and kind of experimented with it until I was satisfied with the look.  I hope you like the final result as much as I do!  I don't have the picture of the final shirt being worn since this is a gift but I'll make sure to get a final photo and post it later.

  • Sewing machine & sewing stuff (needles, thread, scissors, fabric pencil optional)
  • Cotton T-shirt 1 size larger than what you typically wear
  • Ribbon

DIY Pearl Ribbon Bracelet

Original Pin: http://pinterest.com/pin/231724343298464677/

Pin Rating: 3
Difficulty: Medium
Duration: 40 minutes

When I saw this pin I was in awe of how pretty it looked and easy it seemed to be to make.  After I clicked on the link I realized that it was part of a round up blog post and didn't actually include the original link or instructions.  Clicking on the link provided led me to a Pintrest pin and basically I went in circles.  Looking at the link on the website I see that it's a website in another language that I don't see any content.  So all in all I felt disappointed in the original pin which is why I gave it a 3 pin rating.  So I did this pin going off of the pictures alone and felt like this pin is one of the first pins where it looked really easy but wasn't when I actually tried to do it.  Overall result is a great DIY bracelet, but it took a little patience and made me wish I had a 3rd hand to help.  Hopefully this tutorial will help you guy out a lot better than the original pin I found floating around on Pintrest.

You can probably do this with a regular thread instead of the stretch magic cord if you're making it for yourself so you can make the exact adjustments, but since I'm making these as gifts I wanted some stretch room just in case.  :)
